Midea develops efficient ultraviolet laser

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) has initiated a groundbreaking project called LUSTER, short for "Tactical Effective Raman UV Laser Light Source." The goal is to develop a compact, efficient, and reliable deep ultraviolet (UV) laser system that can detect chemical and biological warfare agents with unprecedented accuracy. This innovation aims to revolutionize battlefield and homeland security monitoring by making detection systems more portable, cost-effective, and powerful. Currently, the existing UV-based detection systems used by the U.S. Department of Defense are large, heavy, and expensive—often requiring truck transportation. DARPA envisions a future where these systems can be carried by individual soldiers, significantly improving mobility and response times. The LUSTER project seeks to reduce the size of the UV laser to less than 1/300 of current models while increasing efficiency by tenfold, making it a game-changer in the field. Raman spectroscopy, which uses laser light to analyze molecular vibrations, is particularly effective when using UV lasers. However, existing systems lack the sensitivity and portability needed for real-time threat detection. The new system will not only be smaller but also more sensitive, enabling faster and more accurate identification of hazardous substances. DARPA’s project manager, Dan Greene, emphasized that the new technology should be both highly efficient and affordable. He mentioned that the price of the system should be significantly reduced—essentially “removing a few zeros” from current costs. This makes the technology accessible for widespread use in military and civilian applications. Building on previous work from the "Compact Mid-UV Technology" (CMUVT) project, which produced high-efficiency UV light-emitting diodes, LUSTER aims to push the boundaries further. While LEDs offer advantages in cost and stability, they fall short in terms of sensitivity and accuracy. The LUSTER project will focus on developing advanced laser technologies that match or exceed the performance of today's expensive systems while maintaining affordability and reliability. Beyond defense applications, UV lasers have potential in various fields such as medical diagnostics, precision manufacturing, and even compact atomic clocks. The LUSTER initiative is expected to explore multiple technical approaches, provided they meet strict performance criteria: emitting deep UV light at wavelengths between 220-240 nanometers, producing over 1 watt of power, achieving more than 10% power conversion efficiency, and maintaining a linewidth under 0.01 nanometers. This project represents a major step forward in laser technology, with far-reaching implications for security, science, and industry.
