A mysterious theft left a Yanji resident in shock when their 200-pound safe vanished overnight. On the morning of May 18, Ms. Yu, who runs a small catering business near the Health Bridge, discovered that her store’s safe had been stolen. She was baffled, as she had locked it up before closing and didn’t have any idea how it disappeared.
The safe, which weighed around 100 kilograms, was reportedly taken during the early hours of the morning. Ms. Yu explained that she had closed the shop at 2:30 AM and didn’t have anyone on duty. The shutter door was damaged, making it easier for someone to access the premises. “I think the thief took advantage of the half-hour gap after we closed,†she said. Inside the safe were nearly 3,000 yuan in cash, along with some cigarettes and other items. However, the thief only took the safe and left everything else behind.
Later that day, police received a call about a suspicious object found near the Yanji River. Upon arrival, they discovered a gray, damaged safe buried in the silt. It was about one meter high and half a meter wide. When officers opened it, they found nothing inside. Soon after, the police contacted Ms. Yu, who confirmed that this was her missing safe.
This incident has raised concerns among local business owners. Ms. Yu hopes that others will learn from her experience and take security more seriously. “We should never underestimate the risk,†she said. “Even a small oversight can lead to big losses.â€
According to reports from the China Safe Exchange, such incidents are not uncommon, and businesses are urged to improve their security measures, especially during off-hours. Local authorities are now investigating the case further to identify the suspects and prevent similar crimes in the future.
