However, this convenient reality is now changing, especially for pallet trucks manufactured in China, which account for roughly 85% of the global market. Following February 14th, the European Commission launched an Anti-Dumping investigation into the import of hand pallet trucks from the People's Republic of China. This measure also extended to key components like the pump and chassis, aiming to prevent individuals from importing parts separately and assembling them in the UK.
One notable company affected by these changes is Pfaff Silberblau. On February 7th, 2013, the European Commission initially proposed an 88.1% import duty, which was later reduced to 70.8% following an appeal in Brussels. This decision was officially adopted by the EU on March 14th and has been enforced ever since. The aim is to reduce the influx of cheaply produced pallet trucks entering Europe, which were contributing to wasteful practices and excessive resource consumption.
