Over the past few years, it's become pretty standard practice for users of pallet trucks and the industry as a whole to just say "when they're gone, they're gone." Pallet trucks were so inexpensive that, if one broke down, it often made more sense to simply buy a new one rather than go through the hassle of ordering spare parts, waiting for them to arrive, installing them, only to discover another issue that required even more parts and time. It was straightforward: just get a new one.
Unfortunately, this mindset is no longer applicable to most pallet trucks coming out of China, which account for roughly 85% of the brands available today. This change came about after February 14th, when the European Commission initiated an Anti-Dumping probe into the import of hand pallet trucks from the People’s Republic of China. This investigation also covered major components like the pump and chassis, aiming to prevent individuals from importing these parts separately and assembling them in the UK.
For Pfaff Silberblau pallet trucks specifically, things got intense. On February 7th, 2013, the European Commission proposed a staggering 88.1% duty. Fortunately, this rate dropped to 70.8% following an appeal in Brussels. The final decision was approved by the EU on March 14th and has been enforced ever since, targeting all hand-operated pallet trucks imported from China. The aim is to reduce the irresponsible dumping of these products, especially given the global concerns over resource consumption. You can view the HMRC document here.
