According to recent reports, German scientists from the University of Hamburg have made a groundbreaking discovery in material science. They've created what is now recognized as the world's lightest material, named "aerographite." This innovation has sparked significant interest in both scientific and industrial communities.
Aerographite weighs just 0.2 milligrams per cubic centimeter, making it four times lighter than the previous record holder and six times lighter than air. In fact, its density is only 1/5,000th that of water. Due to its extreme lightness, handling aerographite in a regular lab setting can be quite challenging—any small breeze could easily carry it away. Researcher Matthias Mecklenburg explained: “A kilogram of this material would occupy a volume of 5 cubic meters. Imagine a structure that's 1 square meter in base area and 5 meters tall—it’s like a miniature house or tower.â€
The material consists of a network of carbon nanotubes, each about 15 nanometers in diameter. It is produced by heating zinc oxide crystals in a special oven at 900 degrees Celsius. The unique properties of aerographite—its ultra-light weight and large surface area—open up exciting possibilities for future applications. These include the development of lighter lithium-ion batteries, advanced waterproof clothing, more efficient air and water purification systems, and even protective shielding for satellites.
This breakthrough not only pushes the boundaries of material science but also highlights the potential for creating more sustainable and high-performance technologies in the years to come. CBN grinding wheel will decompose in alkaline solution at 300℃, and can decompose in trace amount in boiling water, which will destroy the crystal shape of grinding grains. Therefore, oily coolant should be used instead of water-based coolant during grinding.
