Professor Zhou Zhen of Nankai University discovered a "breathing" carbon dioxide battery

Can "breath" carbon dioxide battery has a prototype

Can charge and discharge continuously for more than 20 times

Recently, Professor Zhou Zhen of the School of Chemistry of Nankai University discovered a respirable carbon dioxide battery. This type of battery uses graphene as the air electrode of a lithium carbon dioxide battery and metal lithium as a negative electrode to absorb carbon dioxide in the air to release energy.

The idea of a rechargeable lithium-carbon dioxide battery emerged from an experiment by Dr. Su Liwei, a member of the research team three years ago. He found that carbonate as a lithium-ion battery has a very high lithium storage capacity and generates carbon dioxide bubbles during the reaction. Since then, the doctoral student Zhang Zhang has begun to establish a research platform for lithium-oxygen batteries. Through repeated experiments by team members, the electrode performance has been continuously improved. For the first time, graphene has been used as an air electrode for lithium-carbon dioxide batteries, showing excellent performance and continuous charge and discharge. More than once. This is the highest level so far. The performance improvement of lithium carbon dioxide battery is benefited from the high conductivity and large specific surface area of graphene, which provides a good place for electrochemical reaction.

Although the research on rechargeable lithium carbon dioxide batteries has just started, the basic principle is not fully understood, and the dynamic performance and charge and discharge cycle ability are very poor, and further research is needed. However, experts believe that this research is of great significance to promote the application of carbon dioxide in the field of energy storage and conversion, and to realize the leap of lithium-oxygen battery to lithium-air battery.

Relevant research results were published in Applied Chemistry (International Edition), one of the three top traditional journals in the chemical sciences, and were selected as hot papers by the editors. The study was funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the Ministry of Education.
