Currently, the two main types of solar cells are silicon-based and cadmium telluride (CdTe) thin-film cells. These thin-film options are lighter, thinner, and more affordable, making them strong contenders for the next generation of solar technology.
However, the production of CdTe solar cells requires cadmium chloride, a substance known for its toxicity. Additionally, the global supply of cadmium is limited, which poses challenges for scaling up production in the long run.
Researchers from the University of Liverpool have been exploring an alternative by replacing cadmium chloride with magnesium chloride in the manufacturing process. This change could significantly reduce both environmental risks and production costs.
According to their findings, the new solar cell films made with magnesium chloride perform just as well as traditional CdTe films in terms of energy conversion efficiency. Moreover, magnesium chloride is much cheaper than cadmium chloride, making it a more sustainable and economically viable option for future solar technologies.
This innovation could pave the way for greener, more affordable solar energy solutions, helping to meet the growing global demand for clean power while minimizing the environmental impact of production processes.
