Solid wood furniture is not synonymous with environmental protection

In recent years, the term "green" has become a key consideration for consumers when choosing decoration materials. Many businesses now proudly display environmental protection certifications to attract eco-conscious buyers. However, despite this growing trend, the actual standards and regulations surrounding green products remain unclear. Currently, the highest environmental certification in China is the Chinese Environmental Label, also known as the "Ten-Ring Logo." This label is authorized by the State Environmental Protection Administration and is the only official green product certification issued by the government. To earn this mark, companies must undergo rigorous testing by the Environmental Certification Center, which includes representatives from 11 ministries and renowned experts. Only products that pass the "Ten Ring Certification" can be officially labeled as "green products." In addition, the China Quality and Environmental Protection Product Certification (CQC) is considered one of the most authoritative certifications in the furniture industry. Products with CQC certification are known for being low in toxicity, less harmful, and more resource-efficient. However, the environmental standards in China mainly focus on detecting substances like formaldehyde emissions, heavy metal content, VOC levels, and benzene. Even so, using "green" building materials does not guarantee complete safety, as improper production or processing can still result in harmful emissions. At present, China lacks a comprehensive green building materials system, and the existing standards are often seen as basic entry-level requirements. The country does not enforce mandatory regulations on environmental certifications for home improvement materials, leading to confusion and inconsistency in the market. Another common misconception is that solid wood automatically means environmentally friendly. While many furniture stores promote their products as "solid wood," the reality is quite different. According to Mr. Liu, an interior decorator with years of experience, real solid wood furniture is rare. Most products on the market are a combination of solid wood and artificial boards. Solid wood furniture, while natural, has its own drawbacks—such as discoloration from sunlight, fading over time, and susceptibility to warping and shrinking. Some manufacturers use a hybrid approach, where the main frame is made of solid wood, but the panels and partitions are made from veneer or MDF, reducing the risk of cracking while maintaining the aesthetic appeal of natural wood. Moreover, the paint used on solid wood furniture can also release harmful substances, meaning even pure solid wood may not be entirely safe. Some unscrupulous sellers have been known to mislead customers by calling particle board "solid wood particle board," which is misleading at best. Consumers should be cautious and not be swayed by marketing hype. To address these issues, the Municipal Quality Supervision Bureau recently launched a special investigation into the environmental certifications of furniture products. Officials emphasized that they will closely examine whether furniture items carry proper labels, factory certifications, and quality inspection reports. They will also check if the toxic substance and radioactivity levels are clearly stated and if the products have the required environmental protection certifications. The bureau will take strict action against fake certifications and false advertising. It also advises consumers to carefully inspect product labels and purchase from reliable retailers with good after-sales service. If any fraudulent activity is found, consumers can report it by calling 12365. As the demand for green products continues to grow, it's essential for buyers to stay informed and make responsible choices.
