Lux Research estimates that the global consumer electronics market for supercapacitor-related components currently generates around $366 million. The company predicts an 18% annual growth rate, with heavy-duty commercial vehicles expected to adopt ultra-capacitors by 2018. At that time, revenue from ultra-capacitors in commercial vehicles could reach $323 million, while passenger car applications may generate $152 million.
In a recent report titled *“Trends in Supercapacitors in Transportation and Electronics Products,â€* Lux Research outlines the growing importance of these devices across multiple industries.
Unlike traditional batteries, which rely on slow chemical reactions to generate electricity, supercapacitors work by rapidly moving electrons along the surface of their electrodes. This process allows for quicker energy delivery and longer cycle life.
Each supercapacitor consists of two metal plates coated with activated carbon. The porous structure of activated carbon provides a large surface area, enabling it to hold a significant amount of charge—whether through physical or chemical means.
These electrode pairs are submerged in an organic electrolyte, which helps speed up the charging process. When fully charged, each carbon electrode has a layer of charge carriers on both sides, which is why supercapacitors are also known as double-layer capacitors.
