Fog raises the opportunity for ushering in the development of related industries

The recent severe smog has significantly disrupted daily life across China. Last year, Beijing's hazy weather became a topic of mockery, with people joking, "Standing at Tiananmen Square, you can't see Mao's grandfather." This year, the situation in Shanghai sparked another wave of humor: "Hey, I opened my wallet this morning and withdrew 100 yuan, but I still couldn't see Grandpa Mao. The farthest distance in the world isn't between life and death, but holding your hand on the streets of Shanghai, I still can't see your face." As the Shanghai Central Meteorological Observatory issued an orange warning for severe air pollution on December 2, which is still active, online discussions have been intense. Some netizens even questioned British Prime Minister Cameron on Weibo, asking, "Beijing and Shanghai have replaced London as the fog capital—how do you feel about that?" As of December 5, nearly 30 provinces across the country have experienced haze days. Cities are taking action to address the issue. In Nanjing, schools and kindergartens were suspended, while Hangzhou implemented emergency emission reduction measures, urging students to avoid outdoor activities. Notably, the frequent occurrence of urban haze and the rise of PM2.5 have seriously impacted daily life and work. At the same time, it has also triggered a surge in what is now known as the “haze economy.” With haze warnings being issued nationwide, anti-smog products have flooded the market. On the morning of December 5, the A-share environmental protection sector saw a sharp rise. Stocks like Colin Environmental Protection (002499), Guodian Qingxin (002573), and CLP Environmental Protection (300172) all showed strong upward trends. The impact of winter haze has created a golden opportunity for investors, attracting significant market attention. In response to growing consumer demand for eco-friendly products, major online retailers have seen a surge in sales of air purifiers, masks, and activated carbon filters. Products labeled “anti-PM2.5” are now widely available. According to market data, from January to August this year, the air freshener market saw a substantial increase in sales, with cumulative retail volume rising by 70.9% year-on-year. Sales of air purifiers increased by 86.9%. Industry experts predict that by 2015, China’s air purifier market could reach 75 billion yuan. However, some merchants are accused of exaggerating product effectiveness, potentially misleading consumers. For example, many humidifiers on the market include “removing PM2.5” in their names, but this feature is not clearly stated in the product descriptions. Experts recommend that regular masks are not effective against PM2.5, while N95 masks offer some protection. When traveling, disposable medical masks or those with more than 12 layers of gauze are better options. Behind the concept of anti-haze and fog lies a growing concern over environmental pollution, which has caused numerous negative impacts on people's lives and work. Industries such as tourism, real estate, and even urban promotion have started to capitalize on the “haze-free” trend. The smog has led many to move to coastal cities, creating new opportunities for the tourism and real estate sectors. In places like Hainan, real estate projects continue to show strong sales even during off-seasons. Real estate professionals note that worsening haze has increased demand for coastal properties, with many people seeking to “cleanse their lungs.” Some media reported that foreign developers in heavily polluted Shijiazhuang have taken advantage of the situation, running ads comparing the smog-filled sky of the provincial capital with the clean skies of coastal cities. Local residents say it's painful to see their hometown portrayed negatively, and the environmental disparity is undeniable. At the same time, many travel agencies have launched “haze escape” tours, promoting destinations with cleaner air as safe alternatives. Scenic spots with good air quality are being marketed as ideal getaways, using the “haze avoidance” concept to attract tourists.
