A recent report by Zhang Wangpei and Cao Jigen from the Qiandao Lake Newspaper highlighted an ongoing issue within the fastener manufacturing industry: the environmental pollution caused by acidic iron-containing wastewater generated during the production process. This has long been a significant challenge for businesses, often referred to as an industry-wide headache. However, the "Fast-cleaning Wastewater and Waste Slag Comprehensive Utilization" project, jointly developed by the National Standard Parts Product Quality Supervision and Inspection Center and Haiyan Haitaike Standard Parts R&D Co., Ltd., has recently passed expert evaluation, offering a potential solution to this persistent problem.
During a visit to the facility, I observed the small-scale trial production in action. The process involves filtering red-yellow pickling wastewater through lime milk before it enters a closed reaction tank. The resulting water is clear and odorless, making it suitable for reuse. Inside the reaction tank, the leftover "iron yellow" residue can be repurposed as a pigment. For every ton of wastewater treated, approximately 0.006 tons of iron yellow can be produced, with a market value of around 24 yuan per ton. This adds a new revenue stream, generating roughly 3.58 yuan in additional profit. Based on calculations, the county's annual production of about 1.75 million tons of cleaning wastewater results in around 10,500 tons of sludge after neutralization. If 80% of this wastewater could be processed using this method, it would contribute an impressive 33.6 million yuan annually to the factory’s bottom line. Beyond the financial benefits, this approach also alleviates pressure on local sewage networks.
