Researchers at the Cardiff Catalysis Institute in Wales have developed a new method for converting glycerol to methanol by a transesterification process using simple catalysis, thereby increasing the biodiesel yield.
Researchers reacted with water by supplying glycerin with hydrogen, using magnesium oxide (MgO) as a catalyst. This reaction involves a simple one-step process that can be performed under mild conditions.
Since biodiesel is produced from the reaction of fats, oils, and methanol grease, the researchers estimate that biodiesel production can increase by 10% when methanol is produced using crude glycerol. In addition, the newly obtained methanol is derived from biomass rather than the fossil fuel that most of the methanol used for biodiesel production is derived from.
The Institute pointed out that this work is still in its infancy. In future research, researchers will turn their attention to optimize the design of catalysts and increase their activity and selectivity.
“We have proposed an unprecedented chemical reaction, emphasizing the production of biodiesel in a more environmentally friendly and cheaper way. By converting undesired by-products into useful chemicals, it can be reused in the process,†said Cardiff Catalysis Institute ( Professor Graham Hutchings, head of CCI, said.
Professor Stuart Taylor, co-director of the Cardiff Catalysis Institute (CCI), said: "Our goal is to establish ways that the waste product glycerol can be used to form other useful compounds, but we were surprised when we discovered that through glycerin and Water reacts under such a simple catalyst to produce these valuable products.This study has the potential to change the way waste is treated and improve the quality of life by reducing carbon emissions from fossil fuels and encouraging the effective use of resources. .
Professor Matthew Rosseinsky of Inorganic Chemistry at the University of Liverpool did not participate in the study. He said: "This paper shows how such basic catalytic research can develop new low-carbon processes to increase the sustainability of biodiesel, as well as provide new opportunities for the industry, which will stimulate the search for better catalysts."
