Stone use specification: only Class A materials can be used for interior decoration

Stone is one of the most commonly used materials in home decoration, yet many consumers remain unaware of product grades, quality standards, and national regulations. To help buyers make informed decisions, experts from the local home market chamber are offering detailed guidance on different types of stone, their classifications, and testing procedures. When it comes to identifying the grade of a stone product and assessing its radioactivity, Yang Xinli, director of the Tianjin Home Market Chamber of Commerce, emphasizes that while the material's appearance can be observed by the eye, the level of radioactivity cannot. This must be determined through professional equipment. Therefore, the best way for consumers to ensure safety is to request a radioactivity report from the seller before making a purchase. Unlike other construction materials, the radioactivity of stone is not simply categorized as safe or unsafe. Instead, it is divided into three levels: A, B, and C. According to the national standard GB6566-2001, "Limits of Radionuclide Content in Building Materials," Class A materials are considered safe for all interior applications, including countertops, floor tiles, and wall finishes. Class B materials are restricted to areas with limited human exposure, such as certain commercial spaces, but not suitable for residential or public buildings like schools and hospitals. Class C materials are only recommended for exterior use, such as garden paths or outdoor walls. Cao Liyun, the secretary general of the Tianjin Home Market Chamber of Commerce, advises consumers to be proactive about their rights. Always ask the seller for the radioactivity test report. When reviewing the report, focus on the final classification—ideally, it should be "Class A." If there's any doubt, consumers can also choose to send the product to an independent laboratory for further verification. Taking these steps ensures greater confidence in the safety and quality of the stone products used in home projects.
