Anti-fog and smog masks will hurt people

Yesterday, a shocking incident involving an anti-fog mask sparked widespread public concern. The event left many questioning how a product designed to protect health could turn into a potential danger. A man in our province was injured after wearing an anti-haze mask and stepping on a broken manhole cover. The metal strip on the mask's nose clip pierced his face, causing severe lacerations. Doctors had to stitch over 200 needles to repair the damage.

The injured individual was using an N95 anti-fog mask, which features adjustable metal strips at the top and bottom to fit the face more securely. Such masks are widely available in major pharmacies across the city, with prices ranging from 30 to 60 RMB. According to staff at Churentang Pharmacy, there has been a noticeable increase in customers purchasing anti-haze masks recently.

On Taobao, searching for "anti-fog masks" yields over 18,500 products. One of the best-selling items is the "3M brand anti-smog flu mask," which has already sold over 48,331 units as of 7:20 last night. Most of these masks come equipped with adjustable metal strips, raising concerns about their safety when used improperly.

A local woman shared her thoughts, saying, "Zhenjiang has many construction sites, and it's often dusty. We usually ride electric scooters and don’t feel the need for an anti-haze mask. I couldn't afford it anyway. But today, after seeing the news about the mask causing injury, I didn’t think much of it at first. Now I’m really worried. The metal strip seems dangerous. Are there any national safety standards for such masks?"

In response to public concerns, officials from the Zhenjiang Quality Supervision Bureau stated, "Currently, there are no specific safety standards for anti-fog or smog masks. It is recommended that the public choose masks from reputable manufacturers to ensure quality and safety."

So far, no similar incidents have been reported in the city. However, the head of the first-aid department at the city’s first hospital mentioned that while they haven’t treated any patients related to mask injuries, they advise the public to be cautious when wearing masks or glasses to avoid accidental injuries.
