A man in our province was injured after wearing an anti-haze mask and stepping on a broken manhole cover. The steel strip on the mask's nose clip pierced his face, causing severe lacerations. Doctors had to stitch over 200 sutures to treat the wounds.
The injured man was using an N95 anti-fog mask, which features adjustable steel strips at the top and bottom to fit the face. These types of masks are widely available in major pharmacies across the city, with prices ranging from 30 to 60 yuan. Staff at Churentang Pharmacy mentioned that many customers have recently purchased these masks.
On Taobao, searching for "anti-fog masks" shows over 18,500 products for sale. As of 7:20 last night, a popular 3M anti-smog flu mask had already sold more than 48,331 units in a month. Most of these masks include adjustable steel strips for better fit.
"Zhenjiang has many construction sites, and the air is often dusty and polluted. We usually ride electric scooters, so there’s no need to buy an anti-haze mask. I couldn’t afford it anyway. But today, when I saw the news about the mask causing injury, I didn’t think much of it. Now I feel scared. The steel strip really worries me. Are there any national safety standards for masks with metal parts?" said a local woman.
In response to public concerns, officials from the Zhenjiang Quality Supervision Bureau stated, "Currently, there are no specific safety standards for anti-fog or smog masks. It is recommended that the public choose masks from reputable manufacturers."
Has there been any similar incident in the city? A representative from the city’s first-aid hospital said that so far, no patients have been admitted due to mask-related injuries. However, they advised the public to be cautious when wearing anti-fog masks or glasses to avoid potential accidents.
