Aluminum Pretreatment - Henkel's Chrome-free Passivation Technology

China Aluminum Industry Network reports that chromium-free passivation of aluminum alloys has been under development since the 1970s, with chromium-free conversion technologies being widely adopted for surface coatings on cans. By the 1990s, growing environmental concerns led to a shift away from hexavalent chromium due to its harmful effects. As a result, chromium-free passivation technology saw rapid advancements and became widely used in the passivation of steel and aluminum coils.

Today, chromium-free passivation for aluminum alloys primarily relies on zirconium salts, titanium salts, and organic polymers. These technologies have found applications across various industries, including automotive bodies, auto parts, furniture, electronics, aerospace, beverage cans, building profiles, decorative panels, and coils. Their versatility and effectiveness make them a preferred choice for modern manufacturing processes.

In response to stricter environmental regulations, the European Union and the United States set deadlines for phasing out chromium-containing passivation films, particularly for exports to the auto and electronics sectors. For instance, by July 1, 2006, Chinese products had to meet new environmental standards. Since June 19, 2013, the illegal discharge of heavy metals and persistent organic pollutants exceeding limits by three times or more has been considered a criminal offense, with direct legal consequences for responsible individuals and hefty fines for companies involved.

Given these developments, the transition to chromium-free passivation is not just encouraged but essential. It aligns with global environmental goals and ensures compliance with evolving regulatory frameworks.

Henkel’s chromium-free passivation solutions are based on organic resins combined with fluorides, zirconium, and titanium. They are suitable for aluminum sheets, coils, and other aluminum-based materials. The products are ideal for use in vertical waterfall lines, dip lines, and both vertical and horizontal spray systems. After use, the waste liquid must be neutralized and precipitated before disposal, ensuring minimal environmental impact.

The transition from hexavalent chromium to chromium-free passivation is straightforward, requiring no modifications to existing equipment. This makes it an easy and cost-effective switch for manufacturers looking to comply with environmental regulations while maintaining product quality.

Henkel's chromium-free passivation products have received multiple international certifications, including Qualicoat, GSB-International, MIL-C-81706, and MIL-C-5541, confirming their high performance and compliance with industry standards.
