On June 25, 2012, the Provincial Science and Technology Innovation and Technology Awards Conference was held in Chengdu, where 252 scientific and technological achievements were honored with the Sichuan Science and Technology Progress Award. Among them, Zhonghao Chenguang Chemical Research Institute Co., Ltd. received the first prize for its groundbreaking project on the industrialization of new technology for organic fluorine monomers and high-performance fluoropolymers.
The project involved extensive research into reaction mechanisms, polymerization processes, key equipment, and engineering technologies. As a result, five types of high-purity, high-performance organic fluorine monomers and specialty fluororesins—such as tetrafluoroethylene and perfluoromethyl vinyl ether—were successfully developed. Two types of fluoropolymer products, including fluororubber, achieved full-scale industrial production. Additionally, the project introduced safe and environmentally friendly technologies, such as plasma treatment for organic fluorine waste, to realize clean production methods. The initiative has led to the acquisition of 28 national invention patents.
The project also launched several industrialization initiatives, including 1,500 tons/year of fluororubber, 2,500 tons/year of PTFE resin, and 2,500 tons/year of concentrated dispersion. Over 40 high-performance fluoropolymer product series have been developed. Since 2010, the project has generated a total sales revenue of 49.62 billion yuan and a profit and tax of 1.348 billion yuan.
Fluoropolymers play a crucial role in advanced technologies and are essential materials for emerging industries such as energy conservation, environmental protection, new energy, automotive, and biomedicine, as well as for upgrading traditional sectors. However, the production of organic fluorine products is complex, involving long processes, multiple by-products, and significant environmental and safety challenges. Prior to this project, China's fluoropolymer market had limited product diversity, with fewer than 50 specifications available, and high-performance polymers largely reliant on imports.
This project marks a major breakthrough, helping to break foreign technological monopolies and addressing urgent demands from both the defense industry and the high-end civilian market. It represents a significant step forward in China's ability to develop and produce advanced fluoropolymer materials independently.
