New breakthroughs in superconducting cable development can reduce transmission losses

Superconducting cables represent a significant advancement in power transmission technology. A Japanese research team has recently developed a groundbreaking superconducting cable capable of delivering 275 kilovolts of electricity—nearly double the voltage capacity of previous models. This innovation marks a major step forward in the field of high-voltage power transmission. According to a statement from the NEDO (New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization) and Furukawa Electric Industries, the team has created the world’s most advanced superconducting cable. The new technology enables the delivery of approximately twice the voltage of conventional superconducting cables, significantly improving efficiency and performance. The researchers anticipate that rising electricity demand in emerging Asian countries will drive the adoption of this technology. They predict that by 2020, these superconducting cables could be deployed in cities across Japan and other parts of Asia, helping to meet increasing energy needs while minimizing environmental impact. When cooled to extremely low temperatures, superconducting materials exhibit zero electrical resistance, drastically reducing transmission losses. The team enhanced the insulation and conductor design, allowing the cable to handle up to 275 kV. It is estimated that using this new type of cable would result in power transmission losses less than one-quarter of those seen with traditional copper cables. This makes it a promising solution for the future of sustainable and efficient energy infrastructure.
