The new system MIT is developing is expected to help self-driving cars avoid turning

According to foreign media Techspot, MIT researchers have developed a system designed to help autonomous vehicles avoid accidental collisions when cornering. It is still far from the final product, but the progress they have made in recent years is promising.

Funded by the Toyota Research Institute, the system can effectively analyze changes in ground shadows to determine whether there are moving objects around the corner. It is based on an earlier version of the system, which was released at conferences held in 2017 and 2018.

When using self-driving cars for testing in the parking garage, the team ’s modified system can detect approaching vehicles more quickly when sensing and parking, which is more than half a second faster than traditional lidar systems. Half a second does not seem to make a big difference, but in terms of dealing with fast-moving autonomous vehicles, this may be the difference between a serious accident and a slight panic.

Other practical applications of the system include helping robots navigate in busy corridors, and even helping automated wheelchairs walk through hospital corridors.

However, the researchers pointed out that the use of the system is currently limited. The researchers only tested the system in an indoor environment with more consistent lighting conditions, which may make it easier for the system to detect and analyze shadows.

MIT has extensive experience in this field. This private research university has conducted a number of experiments within its scope, involving radar technology, artificial intelligence, and even Wi-Fi, to help it "see through" physical barriers.

Side Emitting PMMA Fibre Harnesses

Fiber Optic Side Glow Cable also known as Side Glow, Side Lit, or Lineal light cable is made from stranded or Solid core Polymer with a clear heat shrink jacket. Our stranded Sideglow cable is designed for tighter turns and longer runs, which is suitable for installation indoors or out. They are most often used to provide light lines in paving or stair fronts or for illuminating around the perimeter of swimming pools. Also Stranded is best in wet locations.
