The topic of choosing comfortable furniture for the elderly is one that many young people are eager to do for their parents. However, while major stores may offer some new products such as massage chairs and special elderly chairs, there remains a noticeable lack of comprehensive furniture lines specifically designed for older adults. This gap in the market can be described as quite surprising.
With the implementation of the newly amended "Law for the Protection of the Rights and Interests of the Elderly People" from July 1st this year, the government has placed greater emphasis on creating a livable environment for seniors. As a result, how to improve the quality of life for the elderly has become a growing concern across the country.
In developed countries, the design of elderly-friendly furniture is highly valued. For example, Canada produces beds equipped with automatic massage devices that can provide regular back and waist massages when activated. In the United States, there are functional sofas that can tilt, recline, and even extend to help the elderly sit or lie down more easily.
Recently, Chinese middle-aged and elderly individuals have begun to develop and customize smart coffee tables and dining table series. At the Guangzhou International Furniture Fair in September, an "Elderly Chair" with similar features was also showcased. These chairs are designed to be intelligently adjustable, allowing the backrest to recline and tilt forward, making them more suitable for elderly users.
Despite these developments, the elderly furniture market still appears rather limited. During my visits to several large home furnishing stores, I found that the range of products specifically tailored for the elderly is still very small. Many young people who purchase furniture for their parents often only choose from mass-market options that match their parents' preferences in color, shape, and material.
Most furniture brand representatives seem indifferent to the concept of elderly furniture, believing that the needs of the elderly are not significantly different from those of younger consumers. In one well-known sofa store, a salesperson responded to a question about elderly furniture by saying, “This sofa isn't designed specifically for the elderly; dark colors are just suitable for them.†Other stores also seem to misinterpret the demand for elderly furniture.
The focus of most furniture retailers remains on the preferences of younger consumers, neglecting the specific needs of the elderly. Additionally, elderly household products often fail to generate quick economic returns, which is why the development of elderly-designed furniture remains limited.
However, the furniture industry is beginning to take notice of this segment. Some brands have launched products aimed at the elderly market, but few have established clear plans to create dedicated elderly furniture lines. A set of solid wood furniture can cost tens of thousands of yuan, and many elderly people are not willing to spend such a large amount. In contrast, many young parents are more willing to spend 10,000 to 20,000 yuan on children's furniture.
Currently, most furniture styles available in stores—such as French palace, English pastoral, and American country styles—are targeted at younger audiences. Although American-style country furniture is often made of solid wood and is environmentally friendly, it tends to be too tall for the average elderly person in China. Similarly, French and English furniture designs rarely consider the specific size requirements of the elderly market. (Editor: Peter)
