It's well known that solar panels can generate a decent amount of current, and their performance depends on factors like efficiency, panel size, and the angle at which sunlight hits them. But when it comes to designing a solar-powered electric bicycle, how exactly should the panels be arranged? The solar electric bike designed by Mojtaba Raeisi offers an intriguing solution:

Raeisi’s approach is refreshingly different from the usual attempts to simply stick solar panels onto the bike’s frame — which often looks more like a cluttered bathroom than a sleek design. Instead, he removed the wheels entirely and placed circular solar panels in the space between them. These panels can be adjusted for optimal angle, usually kept flat with the body of the bike during riding and parking. When you want to maximize energy capture, just tilt them downward for better efficiency.

Of course, the design doesn’t address issues like dirt accumulation or theft protection. That leaves room for us to think about real-world applications and improvements. It’s a great starting point — but what will we do next? Are we ready to take on this challenge and make solar bikes more practical and durable?
