New solution for plastic waste: using seaweed as raw material

HC Plastics News: As people realize that the negative impact of plastics on the environment is growing, the public is increasingly interested in related alternative products.

The Indonesian-based socially responsible company evowa seems to have found a good answer to avoid environmental pollution with edible and biodegradable products.

The company has recently developed a new product that can use seaweed as a new solution to solve the problem of plastic waste in the region, while also increasing the livelihood of Indonesian seaweed farmers.

New solution for plastic waste: using seaweed as raw material

Indonesia is currently the world's second-largest emitter of plastic waste. A survey in 2015 showed that Indonesia produced as much as 81.82 million tons of plastic waste, and 90% of it went into rivers and the sea. It is estimated that by 2050, the amount of plastic in the ocean near Indonesia may exceed that of fish.

The product from evowa, called Ello Jelly, is actually a tableware. These cups made with Ello Jelly contain a variety of flavors, including orange, lychee, mint and green tea. These cups are used in the same way as regular cups and are safe to eat and degrade within 30 days. Ello cups are nutritious, gluten-free, gelatin-free and do not use preservatives.

Another line of Evoware, bioplastics, is an edible, biodegradable food package. Created by local seaweed farmers with a shelf life of two years, it contains no preservatives, contains high fiber, vitamins and minerals and can be customized to specific tastes, colours and branding, printable and heat-sealable.

The Indonesian startup is one of the winners of the Round Design Challenge, which competes with OpenIDEO as the first part of the Plastics Economic Innovation Award.

Our actions have a greater impact on the environment than ever before, and the technology industry caters to the need for more sustainable products and everyday work.

In Switzerland, engineers invented an ultra-thin biodegradable temperature sensor to detect the freshness of food. Recently, a grocery store opened its doors and the items sold were not packaged. What changes can you make to make the planet more environmentally friendly?
