Upside Down Admiral Cultivation Techniques:
Fuchsia is a popular potted plant that rarely produces seeds, making cuttings the preferred method of propagation. Through practical experience, it has been found that using the "soil immersion rooting method" under natural conditions can achieve nearly 100% survival rate.
Water-immersed cuttings are essential for successfully growing upside-down admiral fuchsias. Once separated from the mother plant, the cuttings quickly lose moisture and may wilt. Inserting them directly into the soil often leads to failure, especially during hot weather. However, by first immersing the cuttings in water, you ensure proper hydration after separation and also encourage callus formation. The ideal cutting length is between 5 to 8 cm, with a healthy twig. The base of the cutting should be slightly flattened with a knife. Remove the lower two leaves and keep as many upper leaves as possible. Soak all cuttings in a 0.1% potassium permanganate solution for 30 seconds, then stand them upright so the base remains in the solution for another 30 minutes. Afterward, place the cuttings in clean water for 24 to 48 hours before planting.
When planting in sand, use moist coarse river sand as the ideal substrate. Wash the sand thoroughly and place it in a clean pot before inserting the cuttings. Make sure there's at least 5 cm of space above the pot’s rim so the top of the cutting stem stays below the edge, creating a humid micro-environment. Use a bamboo stick to create a hole when inserting the cuttings. Keep the spacing such that the leaves don’t overlap. Plant the cuttings about one-half to one-third of their length into the sand. In summer and autumn, mist the cuttings 2 to 3 times daily, and expect roots to form within 10 to 15 days.
Once rooted, transplant the seedlings early. Root length should not exceed 2 cm. Start by planting the cuttings in a mix of 50% garden soil and 50% river sand to promote root development. This plain soil is less harsh on new roots, increasing the chances of survival. Water the plants twice after planting, place them in a shallow tray, and keep them in a semi-shaded area for best results.
