China has long been the world’s largest consumer of machine tools, and it remains the top importer of such equipment from Germany and Japan. The steady rise in overall machine tool consumption has significantly driven demand for lathes. Since the end of January 2013, data on China's machine tool product trade have shown that lathes hold the top position, with a 25% market share. Machine tool accessories follow closely, accounting for 21% of the market. CNC machines, grinders, and drilling machines also maintain strong positions, with market shares of 20%, 18%, and 16% respectively.
In recent years, China's machine tool industry has experienced rapid growth, with an increasing numerical control (NC) rate in production machines. According to Luo Baihui, chief analyst at Jinmo Machine Tool Network, there are over 4 million conventional machine tools in China, with one-fourth of them being more than 30 years old. These outdated machines lack transformation value and must be phased out. The remaining 75% are expected to be upgraded to CNC systems. This large-scale modernization could create a market demand worth hundreds of billions, contributing to sustained economic growth. It is anticipated that the NC transformation project will generate industrial added value of several hundred billion yuan.
Machine tool consumption in China has grown by nearly 10% annually on average. Over the past two decades, the global machine tool market has more than doubled, reaching approximately $86 billion in 2011. In 2013, increased investment in large-scale infrastructure projects—such as high-speed rail, urban transit, airports, and power grid expansion—is expected to boost domestic economic growth, further stimulating demand for high-end machinery.
According to existing consumption data, under the national macroeconomic planning, the machine tool market is projected to grow by 14.2% in 2013, reaching 389 billion yuan. This robust growth reinforces China’s position as both the largest consumer and producer of machine tools globally. While continuing to import advanced machine tools, China has also developed a comprehensive plan for its domestic machine tool industry, particularly in the field of numerical control. The "CNC Generation" initiative aims to integrate NC technology into the entire industry, boosting the overall NC rate and strengthening the sector’s competitiveness.
